The Feminist Alliance Trust took its first step with a vision to work on the three core areas — (1) Feminist knowledge production and dissemination; (2) Transformative learning and capacity building workshops to develop job oriented skills, social awareness, critical thinking, attitudinal and behaviorial changes and existential-feminist consciousness; and (3) Free legal aid and intervention, and institutional reforms through RTIs and PILs.
These strands of work aligned seamlessly with the Founder Dr. Basu’s core competencies and long-term experiences and as such did not require that external external resources. With a formal education in Law and Women’s Studies, over 20 years of work experience on feminist and social justice issues, and a lived feminist life, Dr Basu had been carrying out these activities in an individual capacity for nearly two decades.
A fourth area of work, “feminist infrastructure,” emerged as a core need during the organization’s free legal aid and counselling program. It was a felt need that even as woman are provided with legal knowledge and pro-bono litigation support, they continue to remain trapped in violent homes due to infrastructural and logistical issues. Feminist Alliance Trust has identified a new category of women called Women Leaving Violence and for them we are creating short residencies which are safe, comfortable and dignified.
